How-To Guides for Adding Headings for Navigation

The guides on this page provide step-by-step instructions for adding headings. Guides cover programs that are commonly used by educators to creating learning content in digital formats. 

Steps are provided for users who interact with content using a mouse pointer as well as for those users who interact using keyboard commands.

Each guide appears in two formats - HTML and PDF. The PDF handout version is linked at the top of each corresponding accordion tab. 

Using Headings in Google Docs


Step 1

Position the text cursor on the line of text that will be a heading. This formatting will apply to the entire line of text.


Step 2

To navigate to the Paragraph Styles menu item, click on the Format menu and select Paragraph styles from the drop-down menu.

OR

Press ALT + O to open the Format menu and press the DOWN ARROW and then ENTER to select Paragraph styles


Step 3

In the Paragraph styles menu select Heading 1 to Heading 6 and open the drop-down menu.

OR

Press the DOWN ARROW to move to Heading 1 to Heading 6. Press ENTER to open the drop-down menu.


Step 4

In the Heading 1 to Heading 6 menu select Apply Heading 1 to Apply Heading 6 to apply the heading style.

OR

Press the DOWN ARROW to move to Apply Heading 1 to Apply Heading 6 and press ENTER to apply the heading style


Using Headings in Google Slides


Step 1

To create a slide with a heading, select the Slide menu.

OR

Press ALT + SHIFT + S to select the Slide menu.


Step 2

Select Apply Layout.

OR

Press the DOWN arrow to find Apply layout and use the ENTER to open the submenu


Step 3

In the submenu, select one of the slide options that includes a heading.

OR

Use the LEFT, RIGHT, UP, and DOWN arrows to navigate the submenu grid and press ENTER to select a slide with a heading.


Step 4

In the main slide area, select the text box that says Click to add title and type in the heading.

OR

Press ENTER to edit the title placeholder. Type the heading text. Press ESCAPE to finish.


Using Headings in Microsoft Word Online


Step 1

Position the text cursor on the line of text that will be a heading. This formatting will apply to the entire line of text.

Near the top of the window, select the Home ribbon.

OR

Press ALT + WINDOWS then H to select the Home ribbon


Step 3

In the Styles group, select the heading style.

OR

Press L and then use the LEFT and RIGHT ARROW to navigate and ENTER to select the heading style.


Using Headings in Microsoft PowerPoint Online


Step 1

To create a slide with a heading, select the Home ribbon.

OR

Press ALT + WINDOWS key and then H to select the Home ribbon.


Step 2

Select the Layout button.

OR

Press L to select Layout.


Step 3

In the dialog box that appears, select one of the slide options that includes a heading.

OR

Use the LEFT, RIGHT, UP, and DOWN arrows to navigate the drop-down list.


Step 4

Select the Change Layout button.

OR

Either press ENTER or press TAB to move to the Change Layout button and SPACE to select it.


Step 5

In the main slide area, select the text box that says Click to add title and type in the heading.

OR

Press CONTROL + F6 repeatedly to move to the slide view. Press TAB to move to the title placeholder. Press ENTER to edit. Type the heading text, and press ESCAPE to finish.


Using Headings in Microsoft Word


Step 1

Position the text cursor on the line of text that will be a heading. This formatting will apply to the entire line of text.


Step 2

Near the top of the window, select the Home ribbon.

OR

Press ALT + H.


Step 3

In the Styles group, select the heading style.

OR

Press L and then use the LEFT and RIGHT arrow keys to navigate and ENTER to select the heading style.


Step 4

To view more styles, such as subheading levels, select the arrow near the bottom right of the styles list to expand it.

OR

Press ALT + DOWN ARROW to expand the styles list, then use the arrows to navigate.


Step 5

To adjust the font styles and colours of a heading, right click on the heading style and select Modify from the context menu.

OR

Press SHIFT + F10 or the APPLICATION key on the heading style to open the context menu, then press M to select Modify.


Using Headings in Microsoft PowerPoint


Step 1

To create a slide with a heading, select the Home ribbon.

Press ALT + H to select the Home ribbon


Step 2

In the Slides group, select Layout.

OR

Press L to select Layout.


Step 3

In the drop-down menu, select one of the slide options that includes a heading.

OR

Use the LEFT, RIGHT, UP, and DOWN arrows to navigate the drop-down list and press ENTER to select a slide with a heading.


Step 4

In the main slide area, select the text box that says Click to add title and type in the heading.
